A home near Washington, DC exploded in spectacular fashion Monday night after a suspect fired at police from inside.

Video shows the home in the Bluemont neighborhood of Arlington, Virginia bursting into smithereens as nearby residents watch in horror.

A suspect began shooting a flare gun at them before shooting several live rounds inside the home on Burlington Street.

Police have advised the public to avoid the area as the fire department works to extinguish the flames.

Officers were dispatched to the scene at around 4:45 p.m. after getting reports of possible shots fired. But the explosion didn't happen until about 8:30 p.m.

Area residents were told to shelter in place while police surveyed the scene.
