Uploaded On:Monday 4th of November 2024

For almost 4 hours, firefighters searched for José de Alencar Lima Junior. The soldiers found the body, which was in a difficult to access area, which had to be rescued by helicopter.

The police will conduct an expert examination of the equipment of the speed fly pilot , a type of flight practiced with equipment similar to a small parachute at high speed, who fell and died this Sunday (3), from about 250 meters high, Pedra Bonita , in São Conrado, in the South Zone of Rio.

The objective is to find out why the equipment did not open. The man was identified as José de Alencar Lima Junior , 49 years old. His body was taken to the Legal Medical Institute (IML) in downtown Rio and will undergo an examination this Monday (4).

Images taken by visitors to the site show the moment when José de Alencar is making the final adjustments to the equipment. He then runs, loses his balance, and the object does not open. He falls off the cliff and disappears into the forest.

The body of the man, who served in the 27th Parachute Infantry Battalion of Vila Militar, in the West Zone of Rio, was only recovered after 4 hours. It was necessary to use a Fire Department helicopter to lift him and his equipment and take him to São Conrado Beach.

According to the Military Police's report of the incident, a vehicle from the 23rd BPM (Leblon) was called "by members of the hang-gliding headquarters, who reported that they had seen a man lying in the woods after performing a jump with Speed Flying equipment, which is not permitted for hang-gliding users". According to the report, "the victim performed a private jump, as he is not registered for hang-gliding". A fire department helicopter was then called.

The case will be investigated by the 15th DP (Gávea). According to the police, the equipment used by the man will undergo expert analysis and investigators will try to discover the circumstances of the fall. "[It was] a failed attempt at takeoff. You can question several things there, but you can see that this is not a person who has mastered the practice.

This was the result: a fall from almost 250 meters high that caused the death of the practitioner," said Bruno Menescal, vice-president of the São Conrado Free Flight Club. Bruno said that the man arrived alone, left the motorcycle in a parking lot at the National Park, and walked up to Pedra Bonita. From there, he jumped and fell.
