The incident occurred on Christmas morning in Lomas del Mirador. The victim was a 40-year-old bus driver. The attacker, 74, was arrested and is expected to testify today.
“ We are going to end badly,” warned Rafael Horacio Moreno, a 74-year-old retired Federal police officer, to a group of neighbors who were celebrating Christmas on a street in the Buenos Aires town of Lomas del Mirador, in the La Matanza district. The retiree, annoyed by the volume of the music ,rebuked them.
Then, he took his gun and shot one of them dead.
Police sources said that the incident occurred around 6 AM on Acevedo Street at 4100. As seen in the images, Moreno approached the sidewalk in front of the house where the Christmas party was being celebrated.
He said a few words to one of the neighbors and when he saw that his warning had no effect, he pulled out a .38 caliber revolver that he was carrying hidden under his shirt and threatened them. Witnesses said that at that moment he told them that everything would end badly. He was not wrong.
Thus, Sergio David Díaz , a 40-year-old bus driver on line 109, appeared on the scene. Upon seeing the retired police officer’s violent attitude, he approached within a few centimeters of him and began to argue face to face.
The tension shown in the video is clear. It is clear that neither of them was willing to give in. Neither Moreno nor Díaz (in a flowery shirt) tried to lower the level of the argument. Much less so, the other neighbors who were at the scene.
Little by little, the bus driver began to push the retired police officer into the middle of the street with his chest to try to get him to give in, but he never imagined that the worst was about to happen: in the middle of the argument, Moreno shot Díaz at point-blank range in the left side of his stomach.
The attacker then went home, while the victim – according to what can be seen in the video – began to walk with difficulty due to the fatal wound. The only thing the driver could do was hold his stomach with his hands and after a few seconds, he fainted and fell to the ground. His friends tried to help him but it was useless.
The Buenos Aires Police arrived at the scene after a call to 911. There they arrested Moreno, who remained at the scene for a few seconds after the incident, and seized the weapon used, a Taurus revolver with empty and intact shells inside.
The case is in the hands of prosecutor Matías Folino , of the Homicide Investigation Unit of La Matanza, who approved the arrest of Moreno and accused him of homicide aggravated by the use of a firearm.
