Councilman Marcos Aurélio de Araújo (PP), 57 years old, mayor of Tabuleiro do Norte, was shot dead in front of his house in the city of the interior of Ceará, on Thursday night (26).
Security cameras caught the moment of the crime. Marcos Aurélio was sitting on the sidewalk with his mother-in-law and another woman when two men arrived on a motorcycle, ran towards him and shot at least nine times.
During the attack, one of the women who was near the victim ran to protect herself. The politician's mother-in-law, 75 years old, remained seated, unable to escape and was hit by two shots. The elderly woman was rescued, while the councilor died on the spot. After the crime, the two suspects fled on a motorcycle.
The Secretariat of Security of Ceará reported that teams from the Military Police and Forensic Expertise were activated and made the first surveys on the case, which is in charge of the Municipal Police Station of Tabuleiro do Norte.
Marcos Aurélio was from Tabuleiro do Norte. In his elections, he was re-elected for the fourth term as city councilor. At the time, he received 1,508 votes, the highest number in the municipality.
Tabuleiro City Hall decreed three-day official mourning for the death of the mayor of the city.
