GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. – An internal review of a November 2024 deputy-involved shooting has determined deputies acted within Greenville County Sheriff’s Office policies when they shot and killed a woman at K-Mart Plaza.

The sheriff’s office released on Tuesday body camera footage of a November 23 deputy-involved shooting which left 21-year-old Daziana Natasha Kian’te Lewis.

According to video released by the sheriff’s office, at around 2:15 a.m. Greenville County Communications received a 911 call from Lewis who told an operator she was at the K-Mart Plaza and she planned on doing something “stupid.”

When the 911 operator asked Lewis if she felt suicidal she told them “I feel like anything is possible at this point.”

When asked if she would hurt deputies who responded to her call, she told the operator “Yes, I would.”

Deputies arrived at K-Mart Plaza around 2:26 a.m. and over the next 11 minutes, tried to talk with her about why she called. In the body cam video, deputies can be heard asking Lewis if she needs a ride to wherever she is staying or a friend’s house for the evening. They also offer her EMS if she needs to go to the hospital for anything.

While deputies are talking to her, Lewis produces a knife and begins walking towards a deputy, who used a stun gun to stop her from walking forward, though Lewis does not drop the knife.

Over the next several minutes, deputies repeatedly told Lewis to drop her knife.

“Daisy, drop the knife, please. We don’t want you to get hurt,” said one deputy.

In a video from an officer’s dash-cam at 2:37 a.m., as deputies are talking to her, Lewis can be seen raising the knife and running towards deputies who then shot her.

Lewis was transported from the scene of the shooting to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

In accordance with department policy, the sheriff’s office requested the State Law Enforcement Division and the 13th Circuit Solicitor’s Office to investigate the shooting. Those investigations remain ongoing.

“In a parallel investigation the GCSO office of professional standards conducted an internal review to determine if the deputies’ actions were consistent with the strict standards in our agency’s use of force policies, ” said Greenville County Sheriff Hobart Lewis in the video released on Tuesday. “Following their investigation the office of professional standards determined the deputies’ use of deadly force was justified according to the sheriff’s office use of force policy.”
