Uploaded On:Thursday 6th of March 2025

On February 8, 2025, at about 11:30 p.m., deputies responded to a burglary in progress at a home in the 100 block of W. Castle Street. When deputies arrived, they heard a cry for help and saw a man, who they believed had a knife, holding another man in a headlock.

Deputies gave multiple commands for the subject to “drop the knife”. The two deputies believed the man in the headlock was in imminent danger and discharged their service weapons, striking the subject. Deputies immediately rendered aid until paramedics arrived and transported the man to the hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. No knife was found at the scene.

During this investigation, it was determined that Cristian Duran Contreras, 25, was unlawfully inside the residence at the time, which constitutes a burglary. Contreras was arrested on a warrant for Second Degree Felony Murder, Burglary to an Occupied Dwelling, Burglary of a Conveyance, and Petit Theft.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting. The deputies who fired their weapons are on temporary, paid administrative leave.
