LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Video from bodycam and surveillance cameras during a fatal shooting in December at a laundromat was released on Thursday by the Lafayette Police Department.

The shooting was reported shortly before 7:40 p.m. Dec. 5 at Lafayette Laundry, 3100 South St. That’s in a strip mall a couple of blocks west of Sagamore Parkway.

One of the three people shot, Keith Ford, 35, of Lafayette, died from multiple gunshot wounds in what the Tippecanoe County coroner called a homicide. The shooter, Louis McGlothlin, 73, of Lincoln, Nebraska, died at an Indianapolis hospital from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

The other two people recovering from the shooting were identified in the video as Renee Martin, 32, and Salvador de la Cruz. His age was not provided.

McGlothlin first shot Ford, who was sitting with his back to the shooter in the laundromat. Next, McGlothlin fired multiple shots at Martin. Finally, de la Cruz was shot in the lower body.

During the investigation, police at McGlothlin’s home on Dec. 19 found videos he’d made through the years. In the videos, McGlothlin spoke about people in Lafayette controlling his mind. “The content of these recordings strongly suggests that Louis was suffering from undiagnosed and severe mental health issues,” said police Sgt. Shawn Verma in the video.

McGlothlin had no connection with any of the people he shot at the laundromat, investigators determined. “Based on the recovered videos, it is clear that Louis had been planning the attack for an extended period, as some of the footage appeared to be several years old.

“For many years, Louis’ mental health had been in decline, and his delusions about individuals in Lafayette controlling his mind had intensified.

“While Louis had lived in Lafayette as a child, his only familiarity with the area was South Street and Earl Avenue, along with nearby businesses.

“It is believed that he targeted the laundromat simply because it was an open business in an area he recognized.”
