The accident happened before 7am on Monday (7). The victim had just bought bread at the bakery. The driver said he did not see the elderly woman and called an ambulance.
A 78-year-old woman was hit by a bus on Monday (7) while crossing a street in a pedestrian crossing in the city of Cajamar, in Greater São Paulo. Due to the severity of the accident, she had to have both legs amputated .
A security camera at a bakery recorded the accident, which happened shortly before seven in the morning. As she does every day, Vilma Rosa Figueiredo had gone to buy bread to have breakfast.
When leaving the bakery, which is on a corner, the elderly woman looked both ways more than once before crossing Rua das Quaresmeiras.
At the police station, the 54-year-old driver said he didn't see the elderly woman because she was in the bus's blind spot, when part of the vehicle itself is in front of the field of vision. He stopped the bus when he heard a noise and, when he saw what had happened, said he did everything he could to help the victim and called the ambulance .
After the accident, the driver stayed by the victim's side the entire time and called the ambulance.
Vilma was taken to a health unit in the city and then transferred to a state hospital in Franco da Rocha.
In a statement, the Public Security Department stated that the driver was arrested in flagrante delicto and will be held accountable for negligent bodily harm (when there is no intention) while driving a motor vehicle.
