Service dog mauled in upper west side attack; owners demand action - New York

New York City — A 10-year-old Chihuahua mix named Penny, who also serves as a service dog, is in intensive care after being viciously attacked by two pit bulls on the Upper West Side. The incident occurred at the corner of 86th Street and Columbus Avenue and was captured on video.

Penny’s owners, Lauren Claus and Devon Allen, believe the attack was intentional. Allen recounted: “As we pass these dogs, I think the woman from behind let go of one of the dogs and the man turned around and led his other dog onto Penny, and they started attacking. They picked her up from both sides, like together as a team. Seemed like they were led on to her, and he did nothing to try to stop them.”

The pit bulls’ owners were seen walking away after the assault without offering assistance. City Councilwoman Gale Brewer confirmed this may be the second such attack involving the same pit bulls and is advocating for an investigation and potential new measures to address recurrent dangerous dog behavior.
