A man suspected of stabbing four children with a meat cleaver was shot and wounded by New York City police officers Sunday in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn.
Four girls between the ages of 8 and 16 were hospitalized with serious stab wounds after officers found them inside an apartment on 84th Street near 17th Avenue. They are all expected to survive.
The suspect, identified as 49-year-old Longqian Chen, was hospitalized in critical condition. Family members told police that Chen has a history of mental illness.
An 11-year-old girl called 911 just after 10 a.m. and said her uncle was stabbing her and her siblings, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said. The girl did not know her address, but the 911 call center used location technology to pinpoint where the call came from, Tisch added.
When officers arrived at the home, an uninjured child led them inside the vestibule, according to Tisch.
“At that point, [the officers] heard screams coming from behind the door to their left and immediately began forcing their way into the apartment,” Tisch said during a news conference at the scene. “They encountered a man standing near the entrance holding a large meat cleaver covered in blood.”
Officers ordered the man to drop the cleaver, but he refused and moved toward them, Tisch said.
“Two officers discharged their firearms, firing seven total rounds between them and striking the subject, ending the threat,” she said. “This encounter is captured in bodycam video.”
As Jorge Jarama looked out of this front window, he said he took cellphone video and saw two kids all bloodied coming out of the house.
“Like the hands, like that, the whole body. The t-shirt and the pants, a lot of blood. I say ‘Uh Oh,'” Jarama said.
Police praised the quick actions of the 11-year-old girl and a little boy.
“The 11-year-old 911 caller, who herself was a victim, hid a room to call the police, and a young uninjured boy ran in to alert the neighbor,” Tisch said.
“He was shivering and scared and crying. He was just in shock,” the neighbor said. “He didn’t say anything. We gave him some water, a coat and a sandwich to eat.”
