Thief dies after getting trapped in fence during store break-in attempt - Colombia

According to authorities, the 37-year-old man died of suffocation under his own weight, between the bars of the establishment, when he tried to flee the business premises.

An attempted theft ended in tragedy in Ocaña, Norte de Santander.

A man identified as Arlés Antonio Claro, 37, was found dead after getting trapped in the metal fence of a commercial establishment.

According to information published by Blu Radio , the scene was reported by residents of the area during the early morning of Tuesday, May 13, 2025.

Upon arriving at the scene, authorities found the man's body hanging from the fence, his head and neck tightly trapped between the bars, while the rest of his body was already inside the premises.

Local media reported that the man died from his own weight, suffocating, after being suspended from the bars.

According to neighbors' testimony, Claro allegedly entered the building with the intention of committing a robbery and, in the midst of his escape attempt, became fatally entangled in the metal structure.

A local source, quoted by the national media, stated that "people heard noises, but by the time they came out it was too late. They found him trapped and lifeless."

The Ocaña Fire Department responded to the scene to recover the body. The Judicial Police were subsequently allowed to enter, where they were tasked with conducting emergency operations and gathering evidence.

Although no further details have been released about the items the man was attempting to steal, authorities are considering the attempted theft as the cause of the fatal accident.

The case has generated divided reactions among residents of the area.

The body was taken to the Institute of Forensic Medicine for an autopsy, while the investigation into the case continues.
