The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) has released preliminary details and video footage regarding an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Normandy Boulevard on Friday, May 4, 2025. The investigation is ongoing, and information may be updated as it progresses.
The incident resulted in the death of 40-year-old Michael Lee Wright.
On April 28, 2025, JSO officers responded to Wright’s mobile home following a reported seizure caused by a narcotics overdose. Wright became combative with paramedics, was handcuffed, and transported to the hospital. While at the hospital, he exhibited aggressive behavior toward staff and required restraint and sedation.
On May 3, 2025, Wright’s girlfriend left their residence due to his behavior.
The following morning, May 4, 2025, Wright’s girlfriend returned to the mobile home to retrieve her belongings. She reported that Wright was combative, threw objects at her and her vehicle, and then left, requesting a police escort to collect her property.
Officer P. Burke responded to the call. Upon arrival, Wright, armed with scissors, ran toward the patrol SUV, climbed onto the hood, and struck the vehicle while making threats. Officer Burke reversed the vehicle, then moved forward, striking Wright. Wright removed his eyeglasses and held them in his hand. As Officer Burke exited the vehicle, Wright charged toward him. After issuing commands to “put it down,” Officer Burke discharged his service weapon, striking Wright.
Despite efforts to provide medical assistance, Wright succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The scissors Wright had been holding were found beneath the patrol vehicle.
The State Attorney’s Office will conduct an independent review to determine the legality of the officer’s actions. Following this, JSO will perform an internal review to ensure compliance with departmental policies. A Response to Resistance Board will then evaluate the findings, which will be submitted to the Sheriff for final review. JSO is releasing this information in the interest of transparency, with conclusions on the incident pending.
