Matiur Rahman (40), who was thrown from a moving train at Nasratpur railway station in Adamdighi upazila of Bogra, returned home from the hospital on Monday evening after receiving treatment. His son Ahsan Habib confirmed the matter to Ajker newspaper.
Matiur is a resident of Paril village in Raninagar upazila of Naogaon. He was once an auto-rickshaw driver but has been working to send people abroad for the past two years. He was thrown off a train on Sunday afternoon due to a dispute over the documents of a young man being sent abroad. A video of the incident went viral on social media that afternoon. At first, locals thought he was a mobile thief or a robber. Thinking that, after he fell off the train, he was beaten up.
Matiur's son Ahsan said, "My father sent a young man named Sajeeb Hossain to Saudi Arabia for 470,000 taka. But there was some delay in getting the documents. Since then, Sajeeb's family started threatening him. On the day of the incident, when they found their father alone on the train, Sajeeb's brother Rakib and his brothers-in-law accused him of being a thief and pushed him away. They also snatched the 50,000 taka he had."
While hanging from the train, Matiur hit the floor of the platform at Nashratpur station and fell down. He was lucky to survive but was seriously injured. After falling from the train, the excited crowd beat him up, mistaking him for a thief.
Ahsan said, "We rushed to the spot after receiving the news. Then we took my father to Adamdighi Upazila Health Complex. This evening, on the advice of the doctor, we returned home with my father. My father suffered serious injuries in various parts of his body, including his chest, head, and legs."
Although Sajeeb's brother Rakib was called several times to talk to him about the allegations of being thrown off the train, he did not answer. However, their father Mohammad Helal said, "Matiur has not been able to send my son abroad and give him work yet. However, I do not know what happened on the train. The threat is false."
Meanwhile, there have been allegations that the police of Adamdighi Police Station and Santahar Railway Police Station have been slow to take complaints in this regard.
Ahsan said, "When I went to Adamdighi police station to file a complaint after the incident, they referred the matter to Santahar Railway Police. That day, Santahar Railway Police was also avoiding the matter. However, after the incident went viral, Santahar Railway Police has taken a complaint today. I want punishment for everyone involved in this incident."
When asked, Adamdighi Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mostafizur Rahman said, "The incident is within the area of the Railway Police Station. Therefore, it is a matter for the Railway Police."
In this regard, Santahar Railway Police Station OC Habibur Rahman Habib said, "On the day of the incident, they came to the police station, spoke to the sentry and left. The victim has filed a complaint today against some unknown accused, including one person. The police are conducting a drive. We hope the accused will be arrested soon."
