Austin, Texas — On Saturday, May 17, 2025, at approximately 9:50 a.m., officers from the Austin Police Department (APD) responded to multiple emergency calls reporting a male subject in a wheelchair carrying a black pistol while in the roadway on the 1700 block of West William Cannon Drive.
The initial 9-1-1 caller reported that the man, later identified as Danny Palomino, was sitting in the roadway with a black pistol in his lap. A second caller stated that the individual had pointed a gun at her. In response, multiple officers were dispatched to the scene with this information.
Officer Jackson arrived on site at 9:53 a.m. and observed Palomino in the roadway holding what appeared to be a black pistol. Exiting his patrol vehicle with his department-issued rifle, Officer Jackson was informed by a witness that Palomino was armed.
Palomino moved toward the sidewalk and proceeded eastbound, disregarding Officer Jackson’s repeated commands to stop. As Officer Jackson followed and directed bystanders to clear the area, Palomino turned to face the officer and raised the black pistol toward him despite continued commands to disarm.
At 9:56 a.m., Officer Jackson discharged his firearm, striking Palomino. After initially collapsing, Palomino sat back up, still holding the weapon. Officer Jackson fired additional shots, causing Palomino to fall to the ground. Responding officers quickly secured Palomino and provided medical aid.
The weapon was later identified as a Glock replica BB gun. Palomino was transported to South Austin Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. No officers or bystanders sustained injuries during the incident.
