A terrifying incident unfolded at Golden Gate Community Park in Collier County, where a 37-year-old man was attacked with a hatchet, resulting in serious injuries.
The Collier County Sheriff’s Office arrested 62-year-old Gregory Collier on Saturday. Witnesses at the park reported seeing Collier wielding a hatchet and swinging it at a man inside a car parked near the basketball courts.
Geen Louima, a park visitor, expressed his shock upon learning about the attack.
“I’d never expect that. It’s a shock for me,” said Louima.
Louima, who was at the park for a lunch break, was disturbed by the violent incident that occurred just feet away from where he sat.
“It’s scary. I’m by myself, you know, who knows… it can happen to you anytime,” said Louima.
Deputies said the victim managed to drive away and escape after the attack, while Collier walked towards the baseball fields before disappearing. He was later found in Immokalee and taken into custody.
Visitor Daniel Silva shared his thoughts on the incident.
“We shouldn’t let other people, you know their actions, bring us to live in fear either,” said Silva. “I just think that people need to be aware of their surroundings.”
Collier has been charged with aggravated battery causing great bodily harm. The victim received treatment at the hospital for significant injuries.
Authorities are still investigating the relationship between the attacker and the victim.
