An armed group has accused the Myanmar military and its allied pro-military faction of executing several of its captured fighters during clashes in southern Myanmar. The People's National Liberation Army (PNLA) released a video on Sunday showing what it claims are the extrajudicial killings of its detained members. The footage, reportedly retrieved from the phone of a recently captured Myanmar soldier, shows a man in military uniform shooting four PNLA soldiers in the back while their hands are bound. According to the group, additional fighters were fired upon from multiple directions by both Myanmar army troops and members of the affiliated Pa-O National Organization (PANO), though that portion was not included in the footage. Colonel Khun Aung Man, Secretary-General of the Myanmar People's Liberation Army (MPLA), denounced the killings as a violation of international law and accused the Myanmar military and PANO of committing war crimes. The incident occurred on January 13 in Shan State. PNLA officials said one of their soldiers was killed during the clash, and four others were captured alive before being executed. Myanmar has been in turmoil since the military coup in 2021, which triggered nationwide protests, a violent crackdown, and the rise of a nationwide armed resistance. The conflict has since displaced nearly 3.5 million people and resulted in widespread casualties and mass arrests. |
