COVINGTON, Ky. — The Hamilton County Coroner's Office has identified the man who officers shot and killed at a Covington apartment complex.

Charles Neace, 34, of Elsmere was taken to UC Medical Center, where he later died, after a shooting at the Cambridge Square Apartments at around 1:30 a.m. Thursday.

Covington Police Lt. Justin Bradbury said officers responded to the complex after someone called 911 and reported a man "beating on" an apartment door with a butcher knife. Capt. Joshua Bornhorn said the man, identified as Neace, was attempting to break into a ground-floor apartment unit.

Bornhorn said officers had Neace at gunpoint when he "came at" them. Two officers fired multiple shots, hitting him. The two officers were wearing body cameras at the time of the shooting, he said.

No officers were injured, Bornhorn said. He could not confirm if Neace knew anyone inside the apartment.
