A 23-year-old man named Esquivel Herrera died on Tuesday night while returning home from work when he got off a bus and was hit in the head by a stray bullet, according to police.

The events took place on a public road in the Loto 2 area, in Desamparados, San José. According to the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ), the attack was aimed at a group of people not related to Esquivel. However, one of the projectiles hit the boy who was walking down the same street. It should be noted that another man, identified by the surname Rodríguez and aged 20, was also injured after the shots. He was hit in the knee, so he was taken to a medical centre for treatment.

"It is presumed that these people could be collateral victims; however, the investigation is still ongoing by the agents of the Homicide Section to clarify the facts and locate the suspects," said the OIJ.

Diario Extra had access to a video in which Esquivel is seen walking down the street, when suddenly he hears a series of explosions, so he runs and seconds later falls to the ground, having apparently been shot.

According to data from the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE), Esquivel was single, had no children and lived in Guatuso de Patarrá, Desamparados. Unofficially, it was learned that he lived with his maternal grandmother approximately 50 meters from where the events occurred, he worked at a call center, the young man would become the third collateral victim so far this year. This newspaper tried to talk to the mother of the deceased by phone, however, a relative who answered the call indicated that she was very upset and could not speak.
